minimal design stays longer in the mind because it doesn’t resolve immediately. the brain keeps returning to it, trying to understand why it feels different.
mass production had its moment. it built the industry. it scaled brands. it made fashion accessible. but it also diluted it. when everything is available, nothing feels earned.
the 199® influences come from an array of experience over a 30 year period. skateboarding, hip hop, punk, streetwear, graffiti culture, uk garage and drum n bass. the 199® shape is a nod to new yorks lolife culture with an alternative cut.
199® headwear was not built by marketers trying to reverse-engineer culture. it came from living it. thirty years inside street culture.
199® began long before streetwear became a business model for marketing graduates pretending they grew up around culture. long before every second brand started using words like “community” and “authenticity” while manufacturing products with absolutely no emotional connection underneath them.
199® started in 1998.
199® headwear is a built better than most. these cuts are not common and require a nudge in the right direction to wear it well. it's taken several years to get to where we are at and we like to see the headwear worn how it was intended.
